CITY OF CLOVIS UPDATES OUTDOOR PUBLIC WARNING SIREN NOTIFICATION EFFECTIVE JULY 2, 2014
The City of Clovis’ tornado warning sirens are designed and utilized as an outdoor warning system to alert individuals located outside that a dangerous weather event is approaching and to take immediate safety precautions.
Effective immediately, when there is an immediate tornado threat to the citizens of Clovis the “Tornado Sirens” will be activated for three (3) minutes and be turned off for six (6) minutes. This on/off sequence will continue for the duration of the warning period. “The 3 minutes on/6 minutes off sequencing, will keep the public notified of any ongoing danger and maintain the efficient use of the siren system,” advised Emergency Management Director Dan Heerding, Tuesday. “The sirens are only one part of a warning system and we encourage the public to take the necessary steps to prepare for severe weather events.”
For indoor alerts, Heerding recommended that every home and business have a NOAA Weather-All Hazard Radio. NOAA radios issue warnings so the public may take necessary safety measures. The safest approach is to be proactive and use all of the information available to protect yourself and your family from threatening weather.
The tornado warning sirens will continue to be tested every Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. for approximately three (3) minutes. The Emergency Management Department will not test the sirens if there is any indication of inclement weather in the area.
