Former Ice House Demolition

Former Ice House Demolition

The City of Clovis Public Works Department demolished the former ice house,
located on US Highway 60 just north of the Harvey House, on Tuesday as part of the work the
Clovis MainStreet program is completing in the revitalization of the historic railroad district. The
demolition represents a partnership with the City of Clovis and Clovis MainStreet to improve the
area, which is located within the downtown Metropolitan Redevelopment Area (MRA). Clovis
MainStreet has received $250,000 in capital outlay funding from area legislators for these
improvements.

“I want to thank the City of Clovis for their partnership,” remarked Amy Sellers-Parker,
President of Clovis MainStreet, “and I hope the new space will help to revitalize Clovis’ historic
downtown district.”

Mayor Morris also commented on the demolition. “I am happy with the improvements being
made in the railroad district and look forward to seeing further progress made in the area.”

In 2011, the historic ATSF 9005 train was moved from Hillcrest Park to the district, which
marked the first addition to the area. Since then Clovis MainStreet has received additional
capital outlay funding from both local legislators and New Mexico MainStreet to restore the
historic 9005 locomotive and develop the Historic Phil and Vernah Williams Railroad Park. The
demolition of the ice house will allow for further development of this area, including landscape
and parking to highlight Clovis’ historic railroad roots.
