SUPPORT FOR CURRY COUNTY JAIL BOND ELECTION FOR FACILITY TO BE LOCATED ON LAND DONATED BY CITY OF CLOVIS

Curry County is seeking to construct a medium/maximum security jail to house approximately 136 inmates on fifteen acres of land currently owned by the City of Clovis and located adjacent to the City’s Regional Landfill on east Brady Street. The donation of the City’s land is contingent on the passage of a $9,880,000 bond election scheduled for Tuesday, August 6th, 2013.

The Curry County Board of Commissioners approved holding a Special Bond Election to address overcrowding challenges at the current jail in May, 2013. Curry County Chairman Frank Blackburn and Mayor Lansford have been working diligently together to identify a viable location for the proposed facility. “Curry County has looked at several sites and, due to the availability of city land and the need to identify an area that would be adjacent to the city and acceptable to Clovis/Curry County residents, the area on east Brady adjacent to the Clovis Regional Landfill seems the ideal solution,” stated Mayor Lansford Tuesday. “There is no doubt that Curry County has experienced several challenges in the past few years in relation to their jail, not least of which is overcrowding and the need to house inmates in Curry County rather than other facilities in the region. In addition, equipping and designing a proper facility are essential to an operational system that is safe and proper for detention center staff and inmates. In my view the County has presented a solid plan to address this critical need and as a result I encourage Clovis residents to support the Curry County bond issue for the new jail at the proposed location on east Brady. ”
