Skunk Found in Clovis Tests Positive for Rabies
CLOVIS, NM (March 17, 2025) – On Monday, March 10, 2025, Animal Control received a report at 10:44 a.m. for a skunk in the area near Bender Chevrolet, 2500 Mabry Drive. The skunk was later captured near 518 Weatherford Street at approximately 8:20 p.m.
Animal Control initiated testing on the skunk which came back positive for rabies.
Rabies is an infection of the nervous system caused by a virus that is transmitted by saliva through a bite or scratch from an infected animal. Rabies can infect all mammals, including humans and is usually fatal without treatment.
Steps to minimize rabies exposure include:
- Avoiding contact with wild animals.
- Reporting any unusual behavior (such as stumbling, seizures, aggressiveness, excessive salivation) in wild animals to Animal Control.
- If you are bitten or scratched by a wild animal, seek immediate medical attention.
- Ensure your pets have up-to-date rabies vaccinations.
